JULY 10th NSJ 2009
The blues legend BB King was on stage. Although rumours were going that he talked to much it was a great experience to see and hear BB King sing and play his guitar. The man is a real legend.
Roy Hargrove's RH Factor:
This talented trumpeter gave us a great performance with the funky RH Factor. He played music that was suitable for a broad audience. Roy was dressed in style in a three-piece suit and the sneakers he was wearing gave his appearance an extra touch.
The Harlem James Gang:
These four brothers from Harlem were a nice surprise. Appearance was important for The Harlem James Gang too. In the form of cabaret they showed us how the show business in Harlem must have looked like in the first part of the twentieth century. The Harlem James Gang were up to date as well with their fantastic tribute to Michael Jackson. The Gang know how to dance and entertain.
The Spanish Harlem Orchestra:
The revelation of the night was the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. These top musicians from New York gave the crowd salsa, son, rumba and plena to dance the night away. Is was a hot party with excellent musicians.

SMV stands for Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten. These three bassists are really masters on their instruments, the bass guitar. We also found out that the contrabass had no secrets for Stanley Clarke. He played it like he invented it. Same thing to say about Marcus Miller on saxophone. Victor Wooten is a master on electric bass. With their tribute to Michael Jackson SMV wrote history, it was sublime.
Saturday was Erykah Badu day. Erykah is a walking piece of art. This lady is cool and very conscious of what she is doing on stage. It is a must wherever you are to see Erykah if you have the chance. Erykah Badu knows how to entertain the crowd. She sang old and new songs like "Love of My life" and "The Healer". It was amazing to hear how she switched from high to low notes so quickly. Erykah Badu likes the music adventure and it was great for the audience to be part of it. She was dressed like a knight and ready to fight for the poor and the oppressed.

The great pianist Chucho Valdés and his band had a spectacular show on sunday. They played hot Afro Cuban sounds that made the crowd go wild. Yes really loco! It was a blessing to see this legendary pianist and his wonderful band playing these delicious rhythms. All members of his band were amazing especially perscussionist Yaroldi Abreu. Yaroldi brought us into ecstasy with his extraodinary skills as a percussionist.
Raphael Saadiq and his band delivered a great performance. It was showtime not at the Apollo, but at the North Sea Jazz Festival. They rocked the house and the funked it up as well. The crowd enjoyed the wonderful music from the album "The Way I See it" enormously. But the Lucy Pearl classic "Don't Mess with My Man" also put the roof on fire. Raphael was awesome, his two background singers and at the same time his dancers were great just as his band.(TA)
